Built in 1921, the Armory was a gathering place for National Guard Company K, 157th Infantry. But, based on its blueprints, the place to store weapons and equipment had a dual purpose, one for entertaining the troops.
Early in 2007, Brighton Urban Development Co. made an offer to purchase the Armory and the neighboring United Lumber property, bordered by Bridge Street, Strong Street, roughly Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.
In late summer of 2007, plans were revealed to create a cultural center on that block by restoring the library and relocating and expanding the Rangeview Library District Brighton branch on the United Lumber property.
